The Ottawa Food Bank Challenge
Wreck MMA: Bad Intentions has asked the local Martial Arts community in Ottawa and the surrounding area to help the Ottawa Food Bank by starting a challenge between the gyms to see which gym can bring the most non-perishable food items to the event. Donation boxes will be at most local martial arts facilities.

If your gym would like to take part in this challenge and has not been contacted to be involved please send a request to Khris@wreckmma.com, and Wreck MMA will be sure to get your gym involved.

Joker means business
“Three years later I am 7-1″
Carle - IIOTTAWA – Louis-Philippe “The Joker” Carle, a good natured, up-and-coming mixed martial arts welterweight, said his nice-guy smile will be gone but not his nerves once in the ring for a ninth
professional fight Friday night in Gatineau, Que. “The switch will get turned on when the ref will put Vaseline on my eyes,” said Carle, a 25-year-old forklift driver who will fight Simon ‘The Mutant’ Marini of Hamilton (7-2) in one of 10 scheduled bouts at WreckMMA’s Unite for Brian’s Fight.”Then I turn into another person.”Carle, who earned his seventh victory against one loss at a February card in Montreal, trains largely at Ottawa’s FIT MMA but spars occasionally at Montreal’s famed Tristar gym, once with star UFC
welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre. The Fort Coulonge, Que. native suffers butterflies thinking of his upcoming match in front of scores of family and friends at the Robert Guertin Arena. “At this fight I have more people coming to see me. That arena is going to be packed,” said Carle, an ex-hockey player who switched to MMA three years ago. “Every fight feels like the first fight still.” Carle said he has no long-term plan while training 30 hours per week and trying to get noticed in a clogged MMA weight class. “I don’t put years on my career … just keep training and everything will come together,” Carle said. “When I started this I didn’t want to fight but just train and have fun…. Three years later I am 7-1. “It’s a lot of dedication but if you like what you do, it is no problem.”

Fighting female crusader
Ottawa mma combatant smiles through matches, male-dominated sport
April 9, 2010OTTAWA – Even while absorbing facial flurries does female mixed martial artist Anna “Smiles” Barone keep a frown turned upside down.
‘You know when you smile the world smiles with you,” said the cheery Barone (0-1), an mma newcomer who will fight Tannaya Hantelman (1-3) of Halifax in the lone female bout among 10 scheduled at the Unite for Brian’s Fight event next Friday in Gatineau, Que. Barone , who lost her first professional match Dec. 12, 2009 at WreckMMA’s Fight for the Troops, learned in her first amateur bout that taking blows can bring out her best. “I had one of my coaches scream ‘stop smiling when she punches you!,’” said Barone. “But I couldn’t stop. I was so happy.” The native of Sault Ste. Marie picked up the sport 15 months ago after completing her first marathon. She said the euphoria of mma fighting is akin to success in any sport. “Mine just happens to be putting some disciplines together and breaking someone’s will,” she said. “When you are in the cage .. pretty much you are challenging yourself.” A successful Ottawa land development and construction consultant who trains at Ottawa’s FIT MMA, Barone also sees herself as a rare female
crusader within the heavily male dominated sport. “In many cards when there is a female fight often the female fight steals the show,” said Barone. “There hasn’t been someone who brings a lot of attention … and is trying to promote it and develop more females to get into the sport.” WreckMMA’s April 16th event will raise money for the family of Brian Dyck, an Ottawa police officer and former member of the Canadian military diagnosed last fall with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease).Dan Carle

Weight lost warrior
MMA gets Rockland steelworker off couch, into pro debut
April 7, 2010Laughren - 2 OTTAWA – Five years ago Jeff Laughren (Lock-Wren) didn’t tip the scales, the scales tipped far too far over.Next Friday, the 26-year-old welterweight steelworker from Rockland will fight for the first time as a pro in Wreck MMA’s Unite for Brian’s Fight at the Robert Guertin Arena in Gatineau. The former Tae Kwon Do black belt ballooned to 260 pounds before fighting helped start moving his belt in.”I didn’t want to be a fat steelworker,” said Laughren, who works 12-hour shifts at a plant east of Ottawa, and has not weighed 170 pounds in more than 10 years.

Mixed martial arts has become music to Laughren’s ears.

“It is the first thing I think of when I wake up, the last thing I think of when I go to bed. My palms are getting wet right now just talking about it.”

Laughren will fight Gerry Bruyere (0-0) of Kanata on the scheduled 10-bout card dedicated to raising money for the family of Brian Dyck, an Ottawa police officer and former member of the Canadian military diagnosed last fall with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease).

Training at the Rockland Academy of Martial Arts, Laughren has also become part promoter for the WreckMMA event. He plans to sell $3,000 worth of tickets to friends and family.

“My foreman is going to be there,’ said Laughren. “It is nice to know a lot of people care enough to see me fight.

At 5-foot-11 with forearms like Popeye, Laughren has offered, win or lose, to buy a drink for Bruyere after their match.

“I’ve got a little nuclear reactor running in me,” Laughren laughed. “Except after night shift.”

Win-seeking soldier
Ottawa-based MCpl has sight set on first MMA win
April 6, 2010OTTAWA – Master Corporal Randy Turner, one of 20 scheduled combatants for WreckMMA’s upcoming Unite for Brian’s Fight mixed martial arts event in Gatineau, has taken vacation time to run the risk of getting his blocked knocked off. Or doing the block knocking.Familiar territory. The well spoken, chisel-jawed 31-year-old who is five-foot-six has spent 13 years in the Canadian military throughout Canada, rising to his current rank and current place in fighting by constantly seeing just how far up his bar of potential could climb.”Even keel has never been good enough for me,” said Turner, who is 0-1 in advance of facing Mikael Pellerin (0-1) of Victoriaville, Que. on the 10-bout card April 16 at the Robert Guertin Arena.

The event is dedicated to raising money for the family of Brian Dyck, an Ottawa police officer and former Canadian soldier diagnosed last fall with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease).

Turner, currently vacationing from his military job for two weeks, mixes disciplines but doesn’t mince words.

“If you never trip and fall you will probably lead a boring life because everything is always going to be perfect and grand and unfold exactly how you see or want it.”

Born and raised in Halifax, Turner starts out five days per week with a five-kilometre run before training three to five hours in brazilian jiu jitsu, muay thai boxing and wrestling at the Ottawa Academy of Martial Arts.

“I think if you are going to be successful in this sport, you’ve got to have an inner pit bull, and know how and when to release it,” said Turner, adding his gym contains nobody from the wrong side of the tracks.

“There are only people who have a great admiration for this sport and want to do better,” said Turner, who will fight at 135 pounds. “I don’t see where thugs would fit in to a place like this.”
